Steampunk Memes

According to a recent article in Wired, the dynamics that allow ideas to spread virally via modern technologies such as Twitter and other social media were in place in the 19th century:

Twitter is faster and HuffPo more sophisticated, but the parasitic dynamics of networked media were fully functional in the 19th century. For proof, look no further than the Infectious Texts project, a collaboration of humanities scholars and computer scientists.
The project expects to launch by the end of the month. When it does, researchers and the public will be able to comb through widely reprinted texts identified by mining 41,829 issues of 132 newspapers from the Library of Congress. While this first stage focuses on texts from before the Civil War, the project eventually will include the later 19th century and expand to include magazines and other publications, says Ryan Cordell, an assistant professor of English at Northeastern University and a leader of the project.

Female Drivers: Threat or Menace

Female drivers are prone to auto accidents.

According to a report at MSN, in the 12-month period from April 2001 to March 2002, female drivers were involved in over 14,000 accidents per 1 million miles traveled!*

Saudi Arabia has dealt with the menace of female drivers by banning women from driving:
No specific law exists banning women from driving, but the female population is not issued with licences.
Powerful religious leaders, who exert a far-reaching influence over the monarchy, enforce the ban, warning that breaking it will spread 'licentiousness'.
Recently, a Saudi comedian challenged the ban with a satirical video:
You’ve got to have some major cojones to be a comedian, let alone a social activist, in Saudi Arabia.
Hisham explains at the beginning of the video that he used to study in the US. Now, no one knows what he was like before he lived in the US, but he’s a prime example of why it’s important for people to travel – including Americans. International travel – any travel – expands your horizons. And it can show you things like the fact that “socialist” health care isn’t the big bad that washed-up-70s-sit-com-stars claim it is, and that yes, Virginia, women can drive without harming their ovaries.

What do you think?  Should women be allowed to drive cars?  Or vote?  Or own property?  Or wear trousers?! Or make their own health care decisions?

*According to this report, during the same period, male drivers were in involved in over 33,000 accidents per 1 million miles traveled, but that's beside the point of this article.

mmbtv: Breakfast of Champions

Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007 at age 84.  He was a prolific writer.

He finished Breakfast of Champions in 1973.  According to Wikipedia:
Set in the fictional town of Midland City, it is the story of "two lonesome, skinny, fairly old white men on a planet which was dying fast." One of these men, Dwayne Hoover, is a normal-looking but deeply deranged Pontiac dealer and Burger Chef franchise owner who becomes obsessed with the writings of the other man, Kilgore Trout, taking them for literal truth. Trout, a largely unknown pulp science fiction writer who has appeared in several other Vonnegut novels, looks like a crazy old man but is in fact relatively sane. As the novel opens, Trout journeys toward Midland City to appear at a convention where he is destined to meet Dwayne Hoover and unwittingly inspire him to run amok.

Sandman: Overture

To celebrate @ 25  years of Sandman, Vertigo is releasing Sandman: Overture, a new 6-issue miniseries written by Neil Gaiman with art by J.H. Williams III.
According to a review at Newsarama:
While it's hard to say that Overture's first issue is perfect, that it even comes close to living up to the impossibly high expectations set for it is almost miraculous. Sandman: Overture presents a new chapter to the story of Morpheus, one that feels at home with the rest of Sandman's canon, but not one that feels as much like the start of something new.

Playlist - The Very Best of The The

Matt Johnson formed The The beginning in 1977 -- the band has been active in various forms since about 1979.  The band has created some truly great albums, including Soul Mining, Mindbomb, and others.  Since about 2002 Matt Johnson has focused on scoring films.

According to Wikipedia:
The The's music has featured in a diverse range of cinema over many years, from cult classics such as Jürgen Muschalek's Decoder ("Three Orange Kisses From Kazan") and Gregg Araki's Nowhere ("Love is Stronger Than Death") to big budget epics such as Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd ("Darkness Falls") so it was little surprise Johnson moved into the world of film soundtrack composition.
