How to Audition at Home

i.t.i.  i.y?  Audition TODAY and find out!

We're a local start-up making internet videos and audio books.  We need performers (male or female, 18 or over) to provide audio recordings for the spots, product demonstrations, and audio book recordings.  We don't pay for the auditions, but if the public responds to your audition, we may have work for you in the future.  ANYONE in the world may be able to watch your audition, so if you've ever wondered is the Internet into YOU?, this is your chance to find out... It only takes about an hour to audition...
As a special bonus for those of you reading this page right now, I'm going to teach you how to play amz spots auditions at home.  It only takes about an hour (as you know, we don't pay for auditions).  Remember, guys or gals may audition, but you must be at least 18.  All submissions become the property of aah-may-zee spots.

Our goal is to make the following:
1 20 Questions video
1 Tips for Guys / Gals video
1 Movies, Music, Books or TV Reviews (MMBTV) video
1 Ad Snippets voiceover
1 Shakespeare sonnet

I've uploaded a LibreOffice Impress file to Drop Box with the basic interview questions for 20 QuestionsIt's in a zip file along with the Performer release and the Ad Snippets script.  If you can't get it to work in Microsoft Office, just get yourself a copy of LibreOffice.  If you don't want to bother with that, the questions are in the videos.

The current bonus question is: If Peter Dinklage watches this video, what would you like to say to him?  Keep watching this space, as the bonus question changes over time.

You'll need a decent video camera, a decent microphone, Audacity or similar audio recording software, a laptop or desktop, and hopefully a solid background for your interview.

For 20 Questions, you should sit or stand on the left side of the screen, not looking directly into the camera, but at a slant. Place your monitor so when you read the questions, you don't look like you're reading a teleprompter.  You may need someone to page down the Impress presentation in slideshow view unless you have a remote mouse or something, or just memorize the questions.  Impress does allow you to printout the screens in an outline format, if you prefer to work that way.  See the image file for how you set up for the interview.

I realize that if you have an iPad or tablet, you will naturally want to handle this a little bit differently.  Look at you, all fancy with your modern technology.  Hold on a second while I add a Nexus 10 to my Amazon Wish List.  There!  Proceed, guv'nor.  Please proceed.

The total 20 Questions video should take you no more than @ 3 minutes.  You should be relaxed and happy, enjoying yourself.  You're just having goofy fun.  Please pause BRIEFLY between each response, to allow time for the next question to be superimposed onscreen.  Here's a link to the Mr. Spot audition for reference.

Here's the idea for Tips for Guys / Gals

Tips for [ ] Guys [ ] Gals
The first thing I notice when I meet a new person of the type checked above is:

_____________________________________________

_____________________________________________
(examples: shoes, cologne, personal grooming, eyes, etc.)

My biggest pet peeve about this is:

______________________________________________

______________________________________________
(examples: guys who wear cheap shoes, gals who wear so much perfume it makes me gag, only 1 guy in 30 can read body language and makes eye contact, etc.)

[ ] Tips for Guys: offer solutions /
[ ] Tips for Gals: talk about your feelings but whatever you do, DO NOT OFFER SOLUTIONS!

The answers to these questions should form the basis for your script.  When you're ready, sit in front of the camera, interview style, and go over one topic.  Your Tips video should be only about a minute or two.  If you level-2 pass the audition, you'll have opportunities to cover other topics in future Tips segments.  [There are two levels of passing the audition: 1) your submission is accepted for posting; 2) your posted audition is popular on the Internet.]

For the Movies, Music, Books or TV Review video, it's performer's choice: either interview style or looking directly into the camera.  This video should be no more than 3 minutes.  Discuss your single favorite movie, music, book or TV show.  Describe why you love it and how it makes you feel.  The question is, can you convince someone who has never met you that they NEED to experience this work of art for themselves?

For the voiceovers, create an mp3 of yourself reading the Ad Snippets script.

For the sonnet, Shakespeare's sonnets are available at Project Gutenberg.  Just one is sufficient for the audition.  For now, just pick your favorite, but try not to do one that's already been done.

If you're comfortable editing the audio files yourself, great, try to cut out white noise or mistakes.  Otherwise, I'm happy to edit these for length, etc., but try not to send me an overlong file (for example, the sonnet is about a minute -- please don't send me a 5- or 10-minute audio file for that).

You can post the 3 videos and 2 mp3 files to Drop Box (possibly along with some candid photos, whatever you think makes you look best -- no nudes -- this is for YouTube, not Skinemax!) and send me the link.  For Drop Box, you would create your own account.

So, thanks for playing at home and if you have any questions, please drop an email to linktapper (a t) gmail.

If your submission is accepted for posting, we'll take care of adding the bumper and outro and superimposing the questions onscreen, and will assign you a performer name, like Maisy Spot or Nick Spot.  The idea is to protect your identity.  If you must have a particular name and it's already taken, we can talk about making you a Junior or III, or so on.  Of course, we may edit the submissions for brevity, language, etc.

If you create your own landing page, we can put a link to that under your Shakespeare sonnet, so you can make it easy for people to find you if they like your performance.  For example, some people might want to buy you stuff from your Amazon or Victoria's Secret Wishlist  or whatever Wishlist floats your boat (in other words, if your audition is good, you might get "paid", just not directly by us FOR THE AUDITION). Others might want to offer you voiceover work.  Others might just want to try to seduce you or whatever.  Whether you take steps to protect your identity with that page is your business.

Special Note: for the 30 2nd Freestyle, if you're the next big thing, this is your chance to shine.  No pressure.  Just sayin'...  If you feel you must sing a song, please 1) make it acapella and 2) pick a song in the public domain (Project Gutenberg is a great place to look).

PLEASE NOTE: You must be at least 18 for your audition to be accepted.  That's because we don't want to violate any child labor laws, and it seems that for every Opie Cunningham who turns out all right, there are a dozen Buffys (from A Family Affair, not The Vampire Slayer) who lead tragic lives.  Please send proof of age with your submission.  Thank you.
