3D printing is an exciting technology which promises to be as disruptive a technology as the telephone, personal computer, iPad, and many other earlier disruptive technologies. You may have laughed at the comical reactions of the characters on Downton Abbey as the show depicted the introduction of the telephone to that estate circa 1914; 100 years from now, the 3D printer (or the technology that supplants it, as cell phones did for land lines) promises to be as commonplace as the telephone (or cell phone) is today.
Gizmodo reports that household printers can pay for themselves within a year:
The study, conducted at Michigan Technological University, considered 20 common household items—smartphone cases, a garlic press, a shower head, the list goes on—listed on Thingiverse, then used Google Shopping to work out the maximum and minimum cost of buying them online (not including shipping). Then, the researchers also calculated how much it would cost to make each using a household 3D printer.
To realize this type of savings will require creativity, a plan, and the diligence to stick to that plan, but clearly, this technology has tremendous potential.
