A Little Romance: An Appreciation

A Little Romance is a 1979 Orion Pictures release starring a very old Sir Lawrence Olivier and introducing a very young Diane Lane.

It starts with an adolescent French kid, Daniel from La Garenne, watching Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid dubbed in French in a French cinema, followed by a string of American classics with stars like Humphrey Bogart, Burt Reynolds, and John Wayne.  Daniel caps off his movie marathon by stealing a photo of Robert Redford from the cinema lobby and escaping into the streets of Paris...

George Roy Hill is the director.  Thelonious Bernard is Daniel.  Broderick Crawford plays himself.  Allan Burns of The Mary Tyler Moore show wrote the screenplay.

Sneaking his way onto the set of a movie filming in Paris, Daniel introduces himself to Lauren (Diane Lane), daughter of the director George de Marco's number 1 fan (played by Sally Kellerman).  Lauren would rather read a book by Heidegger than watch the filming.

The kids have an instant attraction, and the adventure begins.  Inspired by a legend told by Olivier, they begin a madcap journey to Venice for a sunset kiss under the Bridge of Sighs.  Do they make it?  Do they fall in love forever?
What are legends anyway but stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary things?  Of course, it takes courage and imagination.  Not everybody has that... Something that two people who are in love create together against impossible odds can hold them together forever.  --Sir Lawrence Oliver
